What's Your Opinion....of You?

When we think about being "healthy", our first thought is physical well being, exercise or what we eat.  Sure, physical health is important, but how often to we take time to nurture our mental health?  One big factor of mental health that prevails in daily life is Self Esteem.  Self Esteem is generally defined as our opinion of ourselves.  This "opinion" starts as far back as toddlers and keeps growing and changing over time.  The people who generally have the most influence on this "opinion" are parents, teachers, relationship partners, and other significant people in your life.

Take a minute and try to answer this question: What is my opinion of me?  I will share mine first.  I am generally so consumed with thinking of others I don't take much time to think of myself and I feel selfish doing so.  I have a fairly good understanding of my strengths and weakness.  I know I do not give myself enough credit; I do not like the spotlight.  A lack of positive esteem influence in early years of my life led me to an not so positive opinion of myself, accepting relationships that were unhealthy and kept me from exploring life the way I wanted to.  It was not until my adult life that I have been able to really understand and begin changing this.

Our Self Esteem is our journey - like a mental journal of life that tells our story through our actions.  Assess yourself.  The more positive you are in your opinion, the better you will treat yourself and your body.  If you want to make a life change, or a body change, it starts upstairs.

If you find that your opinion of yourself is on the negative side, here are 9 things you can do to change the path of your journey:
  1. Talk to yourself positively - treat yourself like your best friend. Don’t be hard on yourself when you make a mistake.
  2. Challenge negative ‘self-talk’ – every time you criticize yourself, stop and look for objective evidence that it is true. You’ll realize that most of your negative self-talk is not true.
  3. Don’t compare yourself to others – understand that everyone is different and that is why we are unique.
  4. Acknowledge the positive – accept and enjoy compliments.  Do not dismiss your achievements as luck.
  5. Forget the past – concentrate on living in the present rather than reliving past pain and disappointments.
  6. Stop worrying – ‘worry’ is simply fretting about the future. Accept that you can’t see or change the future and try to keep your thoughts in the present.
  7. Have fun – schedule enjoyable events and activities every week.
  8. Exercise – it is a great boost to the brain for all kinds of things but especially in combating depression and helping you to feel good.
  9. Be assertive – communicate your needs, wants, feelings, beliefs and opinions to others in a direct and honest manner.

Good health flows from the inside out.  Love your body from the inside out.
