Once upon a time I gave up meat for about 3 years. My body felt great, everything seemed to be in working order, and all was well. But, as my social life began to resume, so did a lot of my bad habits: drinking, sugar, meat. I simply lacked the self control. Current day: I generally eat meat most days and I enjoy adult beverages often. I have the sugar under control for the most part. BUT, my body doesn't function nearly as well as it used to.
What's a girl to do??? I have been giving some very serious thought to giving up meat once again. But, I have to feel very comfortable with my go to options because I will PANIC if I get a bump in the road aka I have no idea what I am going to meal prep for the week! I go for recipes that are easy, made with familiar ingredients, and do not take all day in the kitchen (ain't nobody got time for that!). Below are some go to goodies that I plan to begin experimenting with in the next couple of weeks. MEAT FREE CHICKEN (vegetarian chicken) - this recipe turns the "chicken" into nuggets, but you can do whatever you want with it.
VEGGIE BURGERS - hello, we can still use a grill!! AND, you can use this recipe for meatballs too!!
MEAT FREE BEEF/STEAK (vegetarian steak) - I plan to try this without the mushroom. Frankly, I don't even know where to start with specialty mushrooms - that's too hard.

There is a common yearly weight-loss, weight-gain cycle. August is second to December in the rate of weight-gain, with September being second to January in weight loss. Why is that? Does this sound familiar?

January: You make a resolution, and a promise to eat better, exercise, lose weight, drink water, eat vegetables, stop drinking... etc., etc.

July: BBQ, beach, vacation and pool-side season is in full swing. Each offers an abundance of food and drink happiness. Your schedule and eating are more relaxed, leading to some overeating and drinking.
August: BBQ, beach, pool, and vacation season is still in full swing but as August days pass you think, “I’ll wait until September to pay attention to my eating again. It’s only a few more weeks.” In those weeks, with a give-up attitude, you once again begin to gain weight. September: Children and teachers are back in school, and you’re into a routine. You begin to care about your eating and exercise level again, and are recommitted to your health and weight loss. September is a month of renewal. October: Weather changes, there is less daylight, and the days get shorter. Every store you walk into has Halloween candy ready for impulse buying. You start Halloween early, eating candy the entire month of October and this begins to weaken your resolve again. November: You enter November having eaten too many sweets the weeks before. You start to plan for Thanksgiving, and by the time the holiday arrives you are busy with visiting family or family visiting, and Thanksgiving becomes an eating adventure. December: By now you have been overeating for a several weeks and it continues throughout the month with the holidays, gatherings, shopping, visiting, and everything else that takes place in December, and you say, “I’ll wait for January to care for my eating.”
Does this cycle sound familiar? It happens to the best of us - life and fun get in the way of achieving our desired goals. But, the KEY is to remain focused on what you are really after: a healthy body. If your focus is on looking like a super model, you will never get there if the yearly weight gain/weight loss cycle is familiar to you. Always remain aware of your desire to be healthy from the inside out and generally you will make better overall decisions.

Have you tried HIIT workouts? HIIT means High Intensity Interval Training. What I LOVE about these workouts is that they are quick and effective, plus you can do them at home or virtually anywhere! An effective workout gets your heart rate up and down while keeping your body working - the foundation of HIIT workouts. Below are groups of exercises that you can use to build your own HIIT workouts. Doing a HIIT workout 3 times a week is perfect.
Pick Your Moves:
Select one move from each of these groups - the last group only has burpees. This will give you a circuit. Each circuit will have 3 rounds. 2-3 circuits is ideal for maximum effort. Each move will be 30 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest with a 30 second break between rounds. Here is an example: Round 1:
Group A: Lower-Body Moves:
Group C: Core Moves:
The goal is to do three rounds of your four moves (whichever exercise you chose from group A, group B, group C, and then burpees). Do as many as you can of the first move in 30 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds before moving on to the next move. One round should only take you less than 15 minutes. Work at a pace where you can keep moving for the entire 30 seconds — just do as much as you can in that time.
And guess what? Thanks to the higher intensity of this speedy routine, your body will keep burning more cals for hours to come. YAY!!

We have all had that champion poo, you know, the one that makes you take a second look and think, damn, I did that??! On the flip side, we have all had those days when we daydream of just being able to go and not feel bloated and full of sh$t.
This teeter-totter is the story of my life and I can never seem to put my finger on exactly what my body loves and what it is reacting too. There will be weeks of regularity and then suddenly, weeks of bloating and reminiscing of regularity. For me, the change affects my entire body, physically and mentally. Regularity means lots of energy, great sleep, mental clarity and ability to focus. Not regular produces just the opposite: lack or energy, restless sleep, forgetfulness and inability to focus.
There is a really importance to #2. Not only does irregularity affect your physical and psychological well-being, it can affect your immune system, skin, and everything else from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.
How do you fix it? Here are the most common answers: drink more water, eat more fiber (from plants), exercise, and cut back sugar. But, if you are like me, you already do that.
