Who wants to go to a bbq and not eat? Or go on vacation and not indulge? Or get together with friends and not have a couple of drinks? Not me! Here are some tips to help you stay on track with a healthy lifestyle and still enjoy all the fun of summer. 1. 80/20 Rule Healthy eating isn’t about all or nothing. It’s about finding the balance so that you can live a happier, healthier, more fulfilling life. To do that, I live by the 80/20 Rule – eating healthy or clean 80% of the time and allowing myself to splurge 20% of the time. With summer and especially vacations, weddings, and other get-togethers, this is key! To stay on top of my game, I like to plan for when I’m going to have a splurge or treat meal, so the rest of the time I’m eating to plan. 2. Plan Ahead That leads into my second suggestion, which is planning ahead. If you know you are going to be eating out, take some time to look at the menu online and decide what you want. Having a plan for what you’ll be eating and how you’ll want it prepared will make it easier to stay on track when you get to the restaurant and are eating with everyone else. Be sure to avoid creamy dressings and request dressing on the side, and look for items that are baked, grilled, roasted, steamed, broiled, or dry-sautéed rather than breaded, fried, etc. And, keep proper portions in mind. You can always take the extras home in a box! 3. Pre-Eat & Bring Something Healthy If you going to a party or another event, make sure to eat ahead of time. Have a shake or another healthy meal or snack on the way, and bring a clean appetizer or snack with you. Eating ahead of time will help you from feeling overly hungry once you get to the party, and if you bring something healthy, you’ll know there will be something there that you can eat without guilt! 4. Drink LOTS of Water Water during the summer will not only help you stay hydrated, it will also keep you feeling full and reduce any bloat or water weight gain from unsavory food choices. It is very easy to become dehydrated in the summer time especially if you spend a lot of time in pools or other water. They keep your body cool, and before you realize it, you have gone an entire day without drinking any water. I aim to drink my weight in ounces every day, and I try to do even more when I’ve had a few splurges. These tips are just a few of the ways you can stay on track throughout the summer with all of its vacations and special festivities. But, what I have found that REALLY helps me is having a solid nutrition and fitness plan to follow as well as a support system in place to keep me on track and accountable. Having that structure makes it easier to plan to stay on track, and the added accountability helps me know there are others who are experiencing the same things as I am while trying to be and stay healthy! Each week I know what my 3 main healthy meals are and I keep healthy snacks around for in betweens. I have set fitness routine - bootcamp 3 days per week. What is your charity of choice? What cause are you passionate about? Bodynista I come across people regularly who seem to think that eating healthy can be really expensive. Sure, you can make it expensive if you want to, but I choose to keep the cost low. I do not spend more on food now that I would if I were eating differently - I actually spend less (lots of beans, lentils & spinach)! Today, I want to share a couple of tips on how to use sunflower seeds to replace costly health food items like nut meal/flour and nut butter. If you have ever looked into buying either one of these, you may realize you are being price gauged. I bought a giant bag of sunflower seeds for about $5 which is AT LEAST 50% or more cost effective than buying the same volume in smaller bags. The downside is that they are roasted and salted. Many recipes call for raw seeds, but if you are mindful of the ingredients, roasted and salted seeds will be just fine - just do not add any extra salt! Seed and nut tip: If you buy in bulk, store in the freezer can save them from getting the funky "I have been sitting in this cabinet for awhile" taste. Below are 2 recipes that use ONLY SUNFLOWER SEEDS! These 2 recipes turn you sunflower seeds into major ingredients for other healthy food recipes: protein bars, healthy baked goods, and more! Sunflower Seed Flour - replacement for other nut flowers. You will need a coffee grinder or a food processor. I prefer the coffee grinder. Start with FROZEN sunflower seeds. Make sure they have been in the freezer at least a day. This will help prevent the oil separating from the seed and help you have better success with the flour. To Make: Place frozen seeds into grinder or food processor and pulse. Don't grind too long or you will have our second recipe below - sunflower seed butter. If you have a mesh sleeve, you can pour the contents into the sleeve to separate the flour from any parts that may need to grind a bit longer. (I do not have a mesh sleeve, so I did not do this.) Sunflower seed flour is that simple! I store mine if the freezer. This makes a great flour substitute for any recipe you can use nut flour/meal in. Start baking and trying new things! Sunflower Seed Butter
You can start with unfrozen or frozen sunflower seeds. If you start with raw un-roasted seeds, you will want to roast them 5-10 minutes - until they are lightly golden brown. You can use a bit of honey or agave for some sweetness- optional. To Make: Take roasted sunflower seeds (and optional honey/agave) and put them into a food processor or high power blender and blend until smooth. This will take a few minutes. This nut butter is just that simple. This is a nice replacement for peanut butter and any recipe that you use peanut butter for. Do you have a great sunflower seed recipe? Please share it! Bodynista When I think back to how or when I started a healthier lifestyle, I can remember it was not easy. But now I cannot see myself doing it any other way. I know a lot of people who just decide one day they are going to start eating different and start doing lots of exercise, and today is the last day they will eat bad - so they bulk up on shit food. I can safely say that those people have NOT been successful. They may have stuck with it for a week or even a month, but then they go back to the life they are familiar with. The common mistake is that people are not really ready to make a change. If you are REALLY READY to make a change, here are 4 tips I use that will help you be successful along the way. 1. Mindset You need to be in the mental mind frame of making a positive life change, not just a short, seasonal change. You have to understand and accept that it won't be easy but you cannot accept failure. Will you fall off from time to time - YES you will. But falling off means you get up, get right back on and learn from your mistake. Write down exactly what you want out of this lifestyle an envision yourself living it. 2. Plan I have heard "I am going to start this diet next week....." more times than I care to admit. I always ask - whats the diet and what are you going to eat? I ask for 2 reasons: I am curious and I want to see how they are planning to make this a lifestyle change. 99% of the time their plan is this: I am going grocery shopping this week to start next week, but since this is my last "bad" week, I am eating whatever I want. Hey, don't feel shameful telling me that, it's your body, not mine. When you want to start a healthier lifestyle, it takes planning on how you want to do that - not what someone else has defined for you. We are all different. How you choose to change has to work for you. Think ahead of what kind of foods you will want to eat. Find recipes to get you in the mindset. Plan for those cravings - find how to make healthier alternatives. If you can't cook - plan to learn. I don't know how people maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating at restaurants all the time. If you are going to incorporate exercise, plan and schedule your workout days and KNOW what you will be doing. On any given week, I know what I am going to be eating for every meal (I plan and cook ahead) and I know what days I am going to workout and exactly what my workout will be. This stops nonsense from getting in the way. 3. Manageable You want to keep your goals manageable because 1, it is easy to get discouraged, and 2, this lifestyle is going to take more of your time. You cannot expect to go from couch potato eating shit food daily today to eating salads and working out 5 days of week tomorrow. Most of us would fail. Instead, a more manageable change to begin with is something like cutting out soda and working out/moving your body 2-3 days a week. Since you will be planning your meals, you will need some time management skills to prepare them and have your meals ready and with you when you need them. How often do you find yourself at work, unprepared and starving, and you end up with a burger and fries at lunch instead of a better choice meal? 4. Small Steps Being healthy is a lifestyle change, meaning it is for LIFE. In other words, you have the rest of you life to keep working on it and perfecting it. How long your life is depends on the choices you make along the way. Your walking to the end goal, not driving or even riding a bike. It is small steps and it is going to take a long time. My journey started 6 years ago and I am still experimenting and discovering. An example of small steps is adding vegetables to every meal while cutting the soda. Once you have that under your belt, make pasta a once a month meal instead of a once a week meal. The possibilities are endless, but the point is to demonstrate that if you go all in quickly, you are setting up for failure. Carbs and sugar are actually proven to be addictive. When you have them out of your system, you will lose the cravings. I know this first hand. I keep my Iaso Resolution Drops near me at all times to help me when I need the extra boost to curb the carb and sugar cravings. Your system will still be sensitive from eating the healthy foods from Phase 2, so you have to keep avoiding sugars and starches for 3 more weeks. Again, no starches or sugars for 3 weeks! But now, you will introduce other foods you like gradually. Slowly start incorporating dairy, nuts, oils, etc. into your daily meals, but still stay away from sugary fruits like bananas and mangoes. Also, you must not eat starchy food like breads, pastas and potatoes. This will soon come in Phase 4. TIP: Keep weighing yourself each morning and recording your weight, and if you notice a weight gain of 2 pounds or more in Phase 3 immediately do a steak day. A steak day is where you have only water all day, a juicy steak for dinner (cooked without oil), then either an apple or tomato later on. This should put you back on track. In fact, a Steak Day is an effective weight management strategy for Phase 4, so learn it well. During Phase 3 listen to your body and learn to eat foods that help you feel good, and keep as active as you can. Don't give in to temptation in social eating situations or when you have late-night cravings, and remember to keep drinking plenty of water. Phase 4: The Maintenance Phase - This lasts all of the days of our lives. We have released the weight. Poof! It's gone! But, would you worry about regaining the weight you lost after all your hard work on Phases 1, 2, and 3 of your Iaso Tea & HCG program? Well, it doesn't have to be that way. Carefully start to reintroduce breads, pasta, sweets, and sugary fruits back into your diet, but do it in moderation. Keep active, drink plenty of water, and continue weighing yourself. Do a Steak Day as needed if you ever gain 2 or more pounds over your lowest Phase 2 weight, and celebrate your new body by keeping active and using what you've learned.
